Eastern Sicily and its volcanoes

With its heritage of historical and cultural importance melt with spectacular landscapes, Sicily is a land of overwhelming natural beautymade all the more special by its particular volcanic nature. If You are volcanoes amateurs let yourselves be fascinated and dive into our Eastern Sicily’s Volcano Route. We invite You on a journey to explore the greatest natural attraction of the island!

 

On ‘mainland’ Sicily You will discover Europe’s biggest still active volcano, Mount Etna. With its imposing mass over 3350 meters high, it dominates the bustling city of Catania, and the whole east coast. Stroll along the historical heart of the city, rich of Baroque architecture, where You can find beautiful palaces, churches and fountain. Make a stop in Duomo Square to admire the Elephant Statue of the 17th century, which is the symbol of Catania.

 

During the first half of  the tour You will take the ferry boat from Milazzo harbour to reach the beautiful Liparithe largest and most populous of the Aeolian Islands. Historically, it has been the heart of the trade of obsidian, a volcanic glass, and nowadays the largest manufacturer of pumice stone. Stroll along the city center at the foot of the impressive Castle, visit the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo and the Norman Cloister. You are free to explore the island’s natural and cultural treasures at will.

 

Enjoy a full day boat excursion to explore the Aeolian archipelago’s wild nature and ever changing geological aspects. You will first reach the island of Salina, situated north-west of Lipari, made by six ancient extinct volcanoes including the highest one of the archipelago, the Fossa delle Felci Mount,  962m high. Its name is due to a small lake from which the salt was extracted in the past. Today the island is well-known for its capers exported all over the world and for the high quality grapes of the wine Malvasia. Then You will hike on the black beaches and ebony slopes of Vulcanoobserving its ‘fumaroles’ constantly erupting hot gasses. This island, dominated by the spent crater of Vulcano della Fossa, takes its name from the Roman god ‘Vulcanus’. You will have plenty of time for individual visits and You will also be able to bath in its thermal springs and sulphuric mud.

 

Enjoy a full day 4×4 excursion off-road to Etna Volcano together with a professional licensed guide. You will have the opportunity to walk on the slopes of the mount, witnessing the scars left by its past eruptions and observing the actual making of a new landscape. During the excursion You will admire lava flows, breathtaking craters and place such as the “Valle di Bove”, a wide basin on the eastern slope of Etna. Visit the Alcantara Gorge up to 25m high, small villages such as Castiglione di Sicilia famous for the production of the red wine Etna DOC.

 

End the journey by visiting Taormina, one of the most wonderful Sicilian town with its Greek Theatre, the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. The city lies on a natural terrace overlooking the Ionian sea, offering  enchanting views of the rugged landscape and the Etna Volcano.

Day 1: Catania

Arrival at Catania Airport. Transfer and accommodation in Your 4* selected hotel centrally located. Stroll along the historical heart of the city, rich in Baroque architecture, where You can find beautiful palaces, churches and fountain.

Day 2: Catania - Milazzo - Lipari

After breakfast head to Milazzo and take the ferry boat to reach the beautiful Lipari, the largest and most populous of the Aeolian Islands. Transfer and accommodation in Your 4* selected hotel in Lipari.

Day 3: Lipari

After breakfast walking guided tour of the city center of Lipari. Afternoon at leisure for individual visits or to relax. Return back to the hotel.

Day 4: Lipari - Salina - Vulcano - Lipari

After breakfast enjoy a full day boat excursion to explore the Aeolian archipelago’s wild nature and ever changing geological aspects. You will reach the islands of Salina and Vulcano. The transfers between the islands will be by regular ferry boats (high speed if available). Return to Lipari in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Lipari - Taormina

After breakfast head to Milazzo. The travel is by a regular ferry boat. Then transfer by bus from Milazzo to Your 4* selected hotel in Taormina, check in and overnight.

Day 6: Taormina - Excursion to Etna Volcano - Taormina

After breakfast enjoy a full day 4×4 excursion off-road to Etna Volcano, the highest and widest active volcano in Europe. You will discover craters, caves and dirt trails in the heart of Etna forests. During the excursion You will admire lava flows, breathtaking craters and place such as the “Valle del Bove”, a wide basin on the eastern slope of Etna. Visit the Alcantara Gorge up to 25m high, small villages such as Castiglione di Sicilia. Enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch. At the end of the excursion return back to the hotel.

Day 7: Taormina - Catania

After breakfast head towards Taormina to discover one of the most wonderful Sicilian town with its Greek Theatre, the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. The landscape offers enchanting sights of the Ionian Sea and the Etna Volcano. In the afternoon transfer to Catania and time at leisure. Check in and accommodation in Your 4* selected hotel centrally located.

After breakfast check out and transfer to Catania Airport.

CATANIA

Catania is one of the most beautiful Baroque style towns in the world but it has also buildings of its previous past, such as the Roman Amphitheatre and the Norman Ursino Castle where Federico II lived. Walking tour of Catania city center with the Roman Amphitheatre built by basaltic lava stones and through streets and squares rich in baroque churches and elegant buildings. See the Duomo Square with the Cathedral and the black lava elephant.    

LIPARI

Lipari is the main of Aeolian islands, once the heart of the trade of obsidian, a volcanic glass, and now the largest manufacturer of pumice stone. Walking sightseeing tour of Lipari centre at the foot of the impressive Castle; together with your assistant you can visit the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo and the Norman Cloister. In the afternoon time at disposal for individual visits: by public bus You can reach Quattropani and visit the church from where You can enjoy wonderful views or You can reach the Acquacalda beach on the northern coast and walk to see a wide pumice stone quarry.     

SALINA

VULCANO

Vulcano is a wonderful island characterized by the active volcano which last eruption was in 1888-1890. It keeps on proving its vitality with phenomena such as : geysers, steam jets, presence of sulfurous mud appreciated for its therapeutic properties. Time at disposal for individual visits and possibility to choose the preferred activity: You can do a boat excursion to see the Faraglioni and the Grotta degli Angeli, or relax at the spa mud ponds with therapeutic properties, or hike up to the “Great Crater” surrounded by a wonderful moonscape and enjoying an exceptional view of the whole archipelago. This trekking excursion can be done only together with licensed local guides because of the presence of fumaroles issuing toxic gas.    

ETNA VOLCANO EXCURSION

The Etna is the highest and widest active volcano in Europe. Its eruptions are spectacular but rarely dangerous for the inhabited areas around the volcano; anyway in 1669 there was an eruption that lasted 122 days and destroyed several towns in the area.  Since then numerous eruptions of the peak and 60 lateral eruptions occurred, the last in 2008. Full day off road excursion to Etna Volcano by 4×4 vehicles together with professional licensed guides. You discover craters, caves and dirt trails in the heart of Etna forests. See lava flows, breathtaking craters and place such as the “Valle del Bove”, a wide basin on the eastern slope of Etna. TAORMINA

Taormina lies on a natural terrace overlooking the Ionian sea. Built by the Greeks in the 3rd century b.C. and then rebuilt and expanded by the Romans. Today it offers symbols of its great history and is one of the most visited places in the world, loved by visitors thanks to its spectacular views and its Greek Theatre. Sightseeing tour of Taormina and visit of the Hellenic Theatre, symbol of Taormina, turned into a arena by the Romans. Surrounded by cypress trees and prickly pear,  the auditorium was carved into the rock and offers enchanting views of the sea and of the Etna Volcano. Walk along the main street Corso Umberto I and see ancient churches such as the San Nicolò Cathedral built in the 13th century.
