Natural excursions in Southern Sardinia

Sardinia is well-known as a paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean. By joining our tour You will discover the beauty of the island, with its sunny coasts and its white and sandy beaches but also lots of interesting archaeological and natural sites.

The tour starts from Cagliari, the main city of Sardinia, located on the Gulf of the Angels. Walking throught the narrow streets of the old town centre, full of noble palaces, monuments and churches, but also images, faces and smells of daily life. Enjoy a day trip to the village of Sadali, located on the edge of the “Taccu di Sadali”, a large calcareous plateau. The “Is Janas” Caves must be visited before heading to Iglesias, which lies at the foot of the Marganai mountains, in south-western Sardinia. The town has ancient origins back to the Nuragic period and is well-known for its several churches.

The tour continues into Piscinas area, one of the wonders of Sardinia. Depart on a full day guided excursion to the mining complex of Montevecchio and to the Piscinas sandy dunes. You will have the opportunity to spend a night at Capo Spartivento Lighthouse, on the southernmost tip of Sardinia. Still working, it has been turned into luxury Guesthouse.

On the way back to Cagliari, You will explore Chia seaside area, known for its white sand and for its crystalline waters. Take time to admire the wonderful landscape! Another must see place is the archaeological site of Nora, of Punic origins, considered the most ancient village of Sardinia.

Day 1: Cagliari

Arrival at Cagliari Airport. Transfer and accommodation in Your 4* selected hotel centrally located. Time at leisure.

Day 2: Cagliari

After breakfast walking city tour of Cagliari, the main city of Sardinia, located on the Gulf of the Angels. Afternoon at leisure for individual visits. Return back to the hotel.

Day 3: Cagliari - Sadali - Is Janas Caves - Iglesias

After breakfast transfer to the village of Sadali, located on a large limestone plateau. Guided excursion to Is Janas Caves and time at leisure to visit the town. In the late afternoon transfer to Iglesias. Check in and overnight in Your 4* selected hotel.

Day 4: Iglesias

After breakfast full day at leisure for individual visits. Return back to the hotel.

Day 5: Iglesias - Piscinas - Montevecchio - Chia

After breakfast transfer to Piscinas area, one of the wonders of Sardinia. Full day guided tour to the mining complex of Montevecchio and to the Piscinas sandy dunes. Later head to Capo Spartivento Lighthouse, check-in and dinner. Overnight in Chia area at Capo Spartivento Lighthouse.

Day 6: Chia - Nora - Cagliari

After breakfast head towards Cagliari and stop in Chia seaside area to admire the wonderful landscape. Next stop in Nora, one of the important archaeological sites of Sardinia, considered a “must to see”. Guided visit of Nora. Later transfer to Cagliari. Check in and overnight in Your 4* selected hotel.

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast check-out and transfer to Cagliari Airport.

CAGLIARI

Cagliari is considered a historic jewel thanks to several evidences of its history that can be seen walking through the narrow streets: the Punic necropolis, the majestic Roman amphitheater, the Byzantine Basilica of San Saturnino. Walking guided visit of Cagliari to explore its historic center, the Roman amphitheater, the Castle district with its medieval walls.

SADALI

Sadali lies on the top of a large limestone plateau, at about 750 m above sea level. It’s a small picturesque medieval village surrounded by rich forests of oaks, holms and cork trees. Time at leisure to visit Sadali, the St Valentine’s Church of 9^th century, the St Valentine’s cascade which is 7 m high and the unique cascade in Sardinia to be in a town. Here you can go for trekking along some natural paths.

IS JANAS CAVES

Guided visit of the Is Janas Caves, 280m long, with a rectangular entrance, surrounded by the forest. These caves are rich in stalactites and stalagmites, and important archaeological finds; inside the temperature is of 14° and the humidity is of 100%. You should have a sweater and trekking shoes.

IGLESIAS

Iglesias lies at the foot of the mountain Marganai and has ancient origins back to the Nuragic period. The town is known for its several churches, such as the 13^th century Cathedral of Santa Chiara, and the churches of Our Lady of Grace and St. Francis, with the convent dating back to the 16^th century. Day at leisure to visit the historic centre enclosed by walls and towers and the Castle of Salvaterra.

MONTEVECCHIO & PISCINAS DUNES

Montevecchio is a mining complex used originally for the extraction of lead galena and zinc blende. In the 19^th and 20^thcenturies it became an industry so advanced to be a model for mining towns in the world. Piscinas is a true desert with golden dunes, high up to 60 m, going towards the outback for several kms. The beach of about 7 kms, the junipers and the sandy dunes leaves the visitors breathless. Full day tour to visit Montevecchio mining complex and Piscinas dunes.

CAPO SPARTIVENTO LIGHTHOUSE

The Capo Spartivento lighthouse is the unique Italian lighthouse accepting guests and its’ a luxury exclusive location, with suites, terraces and an open-air swimming pool, where the undisputed star is nature. The accommodation can be in the lighthouse itself or in the close Semaforisti Residence, formerly used by the lighthouse keeper staff and now opened to guests.

CHIA

Chia is a fascinating attraction with its wild atmosphere, 6 km of coastline, crystal blue sea, sandy dunes. Here the sandy beaches alternate with high and rocky cliffs. This area hosts various species of waterfowl and is known for the pink flamingos in the ponds near the beaches.

NORA

Nora was a Phoenician town, then inhabited by the Punics and the Romans, thanks to its location overlooking the sea. The guided visit allows to see this ancient site with the Theatre, the Temple of Tanit, the Court, the Temple of Eshmum, the perfectly paved streets and wonderful mosaics.
